VIC - Open Court Tennis Program (Feb & March)

Get Your Racquet On is launching during the 2020 Australian Summer of Tennis. It is an opportunity for adults to come and try, or to re-discover the joy of tennis with no commitments. We will be hosting “open court” sessions every Sunday evening over two months, which are a series of different activities aimed at discovering or re-discovering the joy of tennis.

Hi Vics,

Join us for monthly deaf tennis in Melbourne, on Sundays. All ages, all standards invited. Please RSVP to vic@deaftennisaustralia.org by the Thursday evening prior, so we can finalise our court booking. It will be a mix of fun and social tennis, structured hitting, and possibly some coaching. Friends and family are all most welcome to join in.

Vic - Monthly sessions at Melbourne Park (Sundays)

On the 3rd Sunday of each month we head to Melbourne Park, for the ACE Tennis Club, organised mainly by Deaf Children Australia. Sessions are run by pro tennis coach Peter Thrupp, who reached the second round of the Australian Open in 1986. Peter grew up partially deaf and attend mainstream schools, and knows first hand what it's like. Sessions are supported by experienced deaf tennis players in a voluntary capacity, and interpreters are provided to ensure everyone can be fully involved.

VIC: Baxter Tennis Family Days - March 15th, April 19th, May 24th

It was great to see people enjoying some coaching with professional Peter Thrupp and some social hitting on nearby courts on Feb 22nd, capped off by a BBQ and some much needed icy poles!  

There was great enthusiasm among the 10+ participants to see these sessions continue on a regular basis.  Many thanks to Peter Thrupp and Deaf Children Australia for continuing with this programs - the next on is on March 15th, with further sessions planned for April 19th and May 24th.

A unique opportunity has arisen for 15 deaf kids up to 12 years of age to participate in a 'Kids on Court' experience during the Australian Open prior to the pros taking to Centre Court on  Saturday morning 24th January.

2012 Vic Champs - October 21st

The 2012 Vic Champs event will be a day of tennis for all, at a family friendly event.  Entrants in the Championship Singles and Doubles events must become DTA/VDTA members (DTA/VDTA membership costs $15), and then each event costs just $2.50.

There is also a social tennis event (free to DTA/VDTA members, $6 for non-members), intended to give everyone including hearing family and friends a chance to have a hit.  There will be modified equipment suitable for use by kids.

2011 Vic Champs - Oct 23rd and Nov 20th

Hi Folks, this year we are splitting our tournament across 2 days.  On October 23rd we will have the doubles event at Melbourne Park, then on November 20th we will have the singles event in Pakenham.  For kids & beginners of all ages, there will be some coaching on a nearby court at noon and 1pm - friends & family deaf & hearing all welcome!  See here for a flyer, enter online here.

Vic - Junior Tennis Event - Oct 2nd

This event is offered by part of the Deaf Children Australia spring
holiday program. A couple of players from the Victorian Deaf Tennis
Association will be there to help out on the day.

With instruction from Peter Thrupp, the Head Coach at The Overport Park

On Sunday May 16th, we have our first tournament in Vic in a while!  This one-day event, at a fantastic venue in Melbourne Park (same place as the Aust Open) is a great opportunity to come and play, especially if you haven't been involved before.  As usual, this event is open to everyone who meets the eligibility criteria, whether you describe yourself as deaf, hard of hearing, hearing impaired, cochlear implantee, hearing aid wearer, etc.

Monday night hitting is starting up again on Jan 11th, same time, same place as before.  Details here.
The 5-6 sessions we have over Nov and Dec went well, with 5-13 people attending each Monday, with some of us going to a nearby restaurant for food after - all are welcome to join us for this!  We have as many courts as we need so no need to RSVP - just turn up on the night.  The Australian Open is on so there is heaps of interest in tennis at the moment, and we hope to see a few new ...
